Firstly, a lot of people confuse simple spyware and adware with actual viruses. Download Spybot: Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware (both have free versions), update their definitions, and run a scan with each. If this doesn't solve the problem, look into some anti-virus programs like AVG.
It's nearly impossible to get viruses (or adware/spyware) if you're internetting properly. Never click random links, never open e-mail attachments from people you don't know (and even then, be cautious), and never download ANYTHING you're not 100% sure is legit.
